A portrait created utilizing HDR (1) photography of detail of the Stealth, a building from the mind of by the architect Eric Owen Moss (2). This photograph is only a portion of the southern end of the building.

I have never actually been inside of this magnificent building, but on several occasions and always at night, I have attended business functions in a building adjacent to it. Each and every time I went there, I would be so very taken by the presence of the Stealth and several others buildings in that immediate area, at least some of which are also designed by Eric Moss, that I would always make a mental note to come back in the light of day and check this place out. It wasn’t until I recently read a review in The New Yorker that I finally made the time to take a trip over the hill and across the basin to check out this part of Culver City, CA which is known as the Hayden Tract.

The lines of the Stealth are bold and striking and simultaneously warm and welcoming. The golden California sunset embraced and engulfed the softness of the natural colors of the building in the background. As the architecture writer Paul Goldberger stated, “there is a wound-up tension in Moss’s buildings.” And to my eye as a photographer, it screams out to be photographed in HDR.

All images are copyright David DeRemus Photography and may not be used without prior express written consent.

DeRemus Photography is a Pasadena based photographer and specializes in portrait, wedding and fine art photography and is available for domestic and international travel.

____________________________________

1. In photography, image processing, and computer graphics, high-dynamic-range imaging (HDR) is a set of techniques which incorporate bracketed exposures, that allow a greater dynamic range of luminance between the lightest and darkest areas of an image than current standard digital imaging techniques or photographic methods. This wide dynamic range allows HDR images to more accurately represent the range of intensity levels found in real scenes, ranging from direct sunlight to faint starlight.
Tone-mapping techniques, which reduce overall contrast to facilitate display of HDR images on devices with lower dynamic range, can be applied to produce images with preserved or exaggerated local contrast for artistic effect.

2. According to Wikipedia: Eric Owen Moss (b. 1943 in Los Angeles (LA), California) practices architecture with his eponymously named LA-based 25-person firm founded in 1973.
Throughout his career Moss has worked to revitalize a once defunct industrial tract in Culver City, California.
Moss received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1965, his Masters of Architecture from the University of California, Berkeley, College of Environmental Design in 1968 and a second Masters of Architecture from Harvard University Graduate School of Design in 1972. Moss taught at Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc) in 1974 and was appointed director in 2002. He has held chairs at Yale and Harvard universities, and appointments at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna and the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen.
Moss received a 1998 AIA/LA Medal for his architectural work as well as the Business Week/Architectural Record Award in 2003 for the design and construction of the Stealth project, Culver City, California. He is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects and received the Distinguished Alumni Award for the University of California at Berkeley in 2003. Moss received the 2007 Arnold Brunner Memorial Prize from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. There are ten published monographs on the work of Moss’ office.

This complete executive portrait session was conveniently photographed on-location in their suite.

These images are from my most recent executive portraiture session for The Law Offices of Donald P. Schweitzer* in Pasadena, CA. I have been doing their business portraiture for going on ten years now. This complete session was conveniently photographed on-location in their suite on Lake Ave.

The group images were photographed using chroma key compositing (frequently called green screen), and this session was actually my first usage of this technology for a group portraiture setting. I choose to photograph using chroma key as it gives both my clients and myself more options for selections of the background and even greater control over how the finished background is “lit.” Not to mention, it is also both easier to transport and much quicker to set up than my 12′ x 20′ painted backgrounds.

Here is one of the final images from the group portrait series.

Here is another take on the executive portrait group photo, although this one was (obviously) just for the fun of it.

In addition to the group portraits, we also did a number of individual portrait sessions. This was being done for one new attorney, two new legal support staff members, and also to update existing personnel. And in the recent years, since I have converted to digital capture, I can now recreate a very near exact background coloring to match a previous session. And while this could also be done using chroma keying, I am currently opting to do it using traditional backgrounds and lighting and then doing the final tweaks of color adjustment to the backgrounds digitally.

Here are two examples of the individual portrait sessions.

And for a comparison of my backgrounds, in spite of a three-year span between sessions, here are a couple of examples from the previous portrait session photographed in 2008.

Included in both of these sessions and all previous sessions with this law firm were the edited images online for review, their choice of selections, a written release for rights of usage, retouching, cropping per their specifications, and optimization for viewing on the web. There is also a high resolution (print quality) file that can be included as needed, depending on your specific business or corporation needs. And, of course, all contracts can be customized to fit your specific needs.

A summer wedding at the pleasingly aesthetic Villa del Sol d’Oro in Sierra Madre, CA. The Villa del Sol d’Oro is an exact replica of the Villa Collazzi located on the outskirts of Florence, Italy. The name means “House of the Golden Sun,” which is an appropriate name for this site. This is a great venue for weddings and offers a wide selection of locations for me to work with couples.

Carrie and Sean had decided to not see each other prior to the ceremony, so in their respective rooms at the Villa, I began our photography with candid ready shots of each one doing their last-minute readying. Although, there was one very noticeable difference in the rooms. In Carrie’s room, her mother, her maid of honor, as well as all of her bridesmaids were busy helping the bride get ready, while in with the guys’ room, it was Sean, the groom, who was ready first and busily straightening ties and giving instruction for the proper folds of their pocket-squares.

A quick “controlled candid” taken from the top of the staircase as the bride walks through the foyer with its marbled black and white floors.

Then we’re off to begin the photography of the bride.

My style as a professional wedding photographer includes as little or as much posed photography as you like. And although I feel it is an essential element of any wedding photography coverage, posed photography is only a part of the day’s photography coverage.

With the exception of my B&W infrared, I photograph everything in color, then selective convert some images to B&W.

I finished up with the bride, the bride with her bridesmaids and with her immediate family, then moved onto the individual work with the groom, the groom with his groomsmen and the groom with his immediate family.

Then it’s on to the wedding ceremony on this gorgeous summer day and the Villa del Sol d’Oro is looking very exquisite and welcoming to the bride and groom…

A few highlights from their wedding ceremony.

A little bit of posed photography with the bride and groom and their wedding party.

A few highlights from their wedding reception, which had the seating for dinner on the outdoor courtyard terrace overlooking the reflecting pool, while the wedding cake and dancing were in separate rooms inside the Villa. The food and the service at the Villa del Sol d’Oro are among the best you will find for venues in the Southern California area.

The couple and I slip out to do a little work in the golden hour.

A couple of more photos from the reception events. Sean very enthusiastically worked the crowd…

A good time was had by all in attendance of this fun and festive wedding reception.

I sneaked the bride and groom outside for a few minutes alone for one of my signature closing photographs…

And then arm-in-arm and bearing huge smiles, they left under an arch of lit sparklers, and they were off into the starry night…

Recently I had an opportunity to do a little photography of the Moorish style Plant Hall [1] on the University of Tampa campus in downtown Tampa, FL, starting at dusk and continuing into the dark of night. It was a great opportunity to further my knowledge of, and to delve a little deeper into the world of HDR (high dynamic range) photography [2]. HDR, which is thought by many to be a relatively new technique made available circa the age of digital photography, was pioneered as early as the 1850s by Gustave Le Gray to render seascapes showing both the sky and the sea. However, the ability to incorporate the HDR technique with digital photography is a game-changer and has certainly opened a whole new realm of possibilities.

There are two main components to creating good HDR images. The first of is the capture of the scene in various controlled and differing exposures. The second is the editing of the images to combine them into a single image which will show the full tonal value of the image. It is a really amazing process which can yield an extremely wide range of results ranging from surrealistic fantasy images, to a more photo realistic style.

This first image of Plant Hall featuring its beautiful minarets was taken just as the sun had set and under a threatening sky. It had, in fact, just rained very briefly. On this image, I decided to keep it toned down and create more of a reality-based image. The photos I took to create this image were the last ones taken with any remaining ambient light left to work with. Working with HDR photography opens up a world of new dimensions to photograph with these low light conditions.

For these next series of images of the minarets taken at the the University of Tampa’s Plant Hall I was fortunate to have a greater presence of dark, moody storm clouds blow in. I processed this image using a little more of a fantasy look.

And for these next two images, I was able to catch both the very end of the sunset afterglow and a patch of blue sky peeking through the clouds, which even further enhances the fantasy feel.

And this series of final images of the night, once again combining techniques for working with night-scapes and digital HDR photography capture and processing, was of a partial skyline of the downtown Tampa skyline with the Hillsborough River in the foreground.

_________________________

1. If you’ve been to the University of Tampa, you’ve most likely seen the minarets on top of the University of Tampa’s Plant Hall. The minarets have been variously described as being of Moorish, Turkish or Middle Eastern style. They sit atop a building that originally opened as the Tampa Bay Hotel in 1891. It became the centerpiece of the University of Tampa campus in 1933.

Plant Hall – UT’s main building – is heavily steeped in Moorish influences, and serves as a leading example of Moorish Revival architecture in the southeastern United States. Plant Hall also serves as a focal point of downtown Tampa, and is a local landmark. The school’s newspaper is named The Minaret, a reference to the spires adorning Plant Hall. Formerly the old Tampa Bay Hotel, Plant Hall is a National Historic Landmark built in 1891 by Henry B. Plant.

2. According to WIKI:

High dynamic range imaging

In image processing, computer graphics, and photography, high dynamic range imaging (HDRI or just HDR) is a set of techniques that allow a greater dynamic range of luminance between the lightest and darkest areas of an image than current standard digital imaging techniques or photographic methods. This wide dynamic range allows HDR images to more accurately represent the range of intensity levels found in real scenes, ranging from direct sunlight to faint starlight.

The two main sources of HDR imagery are computer renderings and merging of multiple photographs, the latter of which in turn are individually referred to as low dynamic range (LDR) or standard dynamic range (SDR) photographs.

Tone mapping techniques, which reduce overall contrast to facilitate display of HDR images on devices with lower dynamic range, can be applied to produce images with preserved or exaggerated local contrast for artistic effect.

In photography, dynamic range is measured in EV differences (known as stops) between the brightest and darkest parts of the image that show detail. An increase of one EV or one stop is a doubling of the amount of light. High-dynamic-range photographs are generally achieved by capturing multiple standard photographs, often using exposure bracketing, and then merging them into an HDR image. Digital photographs are often encoded in a camera’s raw image format, because 8 bit JPEG encoding doesn’t offer enough values to allow fine transitions (and also introduces undesirable effects due to the lossy compression).

Any camera that allows manual over- or under-exposure of a photo can be used to create HDR images.

This post is in observance of Earth Day 2010 and to take a moment to recognize one program that is slowly, but surely bringing a beautiful and majestic bird back from the brink of extinction.

The bird I am referring to and is seen in the accompanying photo is the California condor. OK, I’ll be the first to admit, it’s got a face that only a mother could love. Seriously, its not what one would think of as a pretty bird. And when it’s roosting, it seems to lumber somewhat awkwardly. But when when this enormous bird takes to the skies, it soars with the strength of a Bald Eagle and with the grace of a prima ballerina. And these are really big birds with a wingspan that can exceed nine feet.

When we first spotted this bird, it was roosting on a house in Big Sur, and there also happened to be good sized, somewhat burly workman in the driveway of the house. This bird, and another that was also roosting at the same location, were both clearly larger than this man’s torso. Reading about their size is one thing. Seeing these winged creatures in comparison to a man, is totally another.

This image is in reality a composite of the same bird, taken about 3 seconds apart. I made the decision to merge the two images into a composite, as I thought in this manner it shows an interesting perspective of its wings in flight.

A little history of the CA condor.

In 1982, on the brink of extinction, the last 22 California condors were placed in a captive breeding program. The world population of California condors is now approximately 350 birds, more than half of which are flying free in the skies above California, Arizona and Baja California, Mexico. The others are in breeding centers and programs at the San Diego Zoo’s Wild Animal Park and Los Angeles Zoo. Two additional breeding centers which are now assisting with the recovery of the species are the Peregrine Fund’s World Center for Birds of Prey and the Oregon Zoo.

And in March 2010 a California condor was born in the wild. This was the first hatching of a chick in the wild in over 50 years. This is really good news in spite of the fact that the egg this chick came from was actually conceived in a park.

More information on the California condor and the ongoing efforts to fully bring this bird back into wild can be found at CA Condor Conservation and Ventana Wildlife Association.

For this engagement session in Pasadena, we were very fortunate to have access to this beautiful and stylish location, and it is fitting, as their wedding photography will feature them at the historic San Gabriel Mission and Pasadena’s Castle Green Hotel.

As you can see, we set out to have a good time, and we got to the good stuff (having fun) right away. I find photographing couples for engagement sessions to usually be really easy to do as there is almost always a certain amount of emotion that I can tap into.

Although the majority of the photography in all the engagement sessions I do primarily focuses on and features the two as a couple, I also spend some time working with each person individually. By working with each person on a one-to-one basis, I can get a sense of their strengths and weaknesses (speaking in photogenic terms only here), how serious or playful they can be, and what they may or may not respond to. This, of course, gives us a great advantage for doing their wedding photography on their wedding day.

Doing an engagement session in an urban setting can be every bit as aesthetically pleasing as working in a natural environment. It is especially rewarding when you have a great location such as this with pleasing architecture, a classic look, and a number of different settings to work with.

Watch for a future post on this couple which will feature photography from their wedding ceremony at the San Gabriel Mission and reception at the Castle Green Hotel in Old Town Pasadena.

A quick post from my most recent engagement session in a small wooded area in Los Angeles, only minutes away from Pasadena.

This was a fun session with a lively couple on a somewhat cold Southern California day. Yet we managed to have a good time, and we walked away with a lot of good images.

This image is an example of one of my favorite shooting styles, which is controlled candid. It is a great way to capture non-posed and candid moments, yet I have the advantage of selecting my background and predefining my composition. It is a style that the majority of my clients respond well to. This type of photography, blended together with inter-active posed and posed, are some of the elements of my style of photographing weddings, engagement sessions and even a family portrait session, and is referred to as photo-fusion.

Another item I like about this image is the background. It was early winter, so we have leaves both still in the trees and fallen on the ground adding additional depth, dimension and highlights. And on a side note, I think it’s a good thing that the City of Los Angeles has at least some areas which have been left to nature, and I support efforts of groups such as Tree People Los Angeles to plant more.

To read more about my styles for wedding and engagement session photography, please visit my html website, www.deremus.com.

One of the most important aspects when photographing corporate executive portraiture, is being able to re-create the specific look and feel of a previous session in every following session done at a later date. And to that issue, I offer this post of images which were photographed a number of weeks after the original session. Both sessions were done at the business offices of the law firm of Vanderford & Ruiz, LLC in Pasadena.

And like the first session, this session included photographing each individual from two different perspectives to ensure we captured their “best side.”

These executive portrait sessions also included 10 to 15 minutes per individual, a minimum of 30 previews per individual (after the editing), all post-production time to edit the digital files, previews online on my password protected online viewing gallery, retouching of their selected final images, images sized per their web builder’s specifications, all requested rights of usage, and of course the finished images.

This wedding ceremony was in the Horseshoe Gardens at the Langham Huntington Hotel in Pasadena. To view more of my wedding photography coverage of this event other than the wedding ceremony featured on this post, please check out my slide-show video of this event at Wedding at the Langham Hotel.

The bride is often led in by a brother or uncle, where the groom waits with the bride’s parents. The bride’s parents offer their daughter in marriage in a ritual called kanyadan.

Indian marriages are known for their lavish and vibrant look, but in reality there is much more than just the gloss and glamour in an Indian wedding ceremony. In fact, the Indian wedding ceremonies are the most ritualistic and serious of affair than any other kind of marriage performed anywhere else in the world, and it is considered as a soulful affair of the merger of two souls.

Hindu wedding ceremonies are traditionally conducted at least partially in Sanskrit, the language in which most holy Hindu ceremonies are conducted. This Hindu Priest was also fluent in English and translated the complete ceremony and the meanings of each ritual he performed into English.

In most Hindu weddings, the ceremony is held on a small, usually covered stage, known as mandap. This couple decided against the covering so that the guests could see and enjoy the ceremony, and they also felt the backdrop of the Langham Hotel was sufficient enough. It also allowed me to get better unobstructed wedding photography coverage.

After the initial exchange of garlands by the bride and groom, the bride and groom are next seated in front of a holy fire, or agni, as a priest recites various mantras from the Holy Scriptures. In Hinduism, fire is regarded as a purifier and a sustainer of life. In a ritual called Mangal Fera, the couple offer prayers to the fire, which represents God serving as the couple’s witness as the two are joined in marriage. Prayers are offered by placing honey, rice, and flowers in the flame. In this ceremony the sashes worn by the bride and groom are tied together for the bride and groom walk around the fire seven times; each time around the fire, a symbol of the four ashrams of life, praying and exchanging vows of duty, love, fidelity, and respect.

The rituals performed at an Indian ceremony vary greatly depending on what area of Indian they originate from. This ceremony was predominately based on traditions of Northern India, and one of the most cherished and symbolic tradition is the placing of the toe ring on the bride by the groom.

Brides typically dress in colorful saris and are painted in elaborate mendhi or henna designs covering her hands and feet before the ceremonies begin. It is said that the darker and bolder that the Henna becomes shows the deep love that she will hold for her husband. The groom is dressed in a sherwani (long jacket) and ‘churidars’ (fitted trousers).

And one of the final rituals performed in this ceremony was the application of the ceremonial Tilaka on the bride’s forehead by the groom to indicate her marital status.

It is worth mentioning that according to Indian tradition, in a Hindu wedding, the bride and groom marry each other and the priest only assists with the Mantra.

“We should be able to live a graceful life that is full of mutual love and warmth. Our sentiments should be auspicious.

Some days are truly blessed… For instance the day I photographed this couple’s engagement session in Monrovia*. The weather couldn’t have been more perfect or the location more ideal. And this couple, Jennifer and Dylan were both very upbeat and relaxed and they both took direction exceptionally well.

Photographing an engagement session is typically a lot different that doing the same couple’s wedding photography in the sense that, I have the couples undivided attention and we have more time devoted just to creating photographic images.

When I photograph an engagement session my preferred style is to combine a certain amount of posed work, with a usually much larger amount of inter-active posed, and also a lot of controlled candid or “faux-tojournalism.” You will see examples of each of the mentioned styles in these few images. I use this same style of blending different types of photography when I am photographing weddings. Although when I doing wedding photography, I include at least two other styles as well. For more about my style of photographing weddings, please visit my html website: deremus.com. Or, if you haven’t been there already, check out My Style as a Wedding Photographer.

While most of the photography in an engagement session is devoted to the couple, I also work with each person individually. This not only gives them images which can be used in my totally unique, custom designed and fully retouched guest sign-in albums, it also gives us a chance to work with each other on a one-on-one basis.

And the more experience we have working together, both individually and as a couple prior to their wedding day, the easier it is to quickly create those beautiful images of the two of them on their wedding day.

Oh yeah… another thing I personally like to do and, I also encourage my clients to do, both at their engagement session and for their wedding photography, is to HAVE FUN!

*Monrovia is a small and beautiful foothill community in the Pasadena area. Monrovia is the fourth oldest general law city in Los Angeles County and the L.A. Basin (after Los Angeles, Santa Monica, and Pasadena). Incorporated in 1887, Monrovia has grown from a sparse community of orange ranches to a residential community of 37,000. People traveling between Los Angeles and San Bernardino traveled “via Monroe’s Ranch,” hence the name.
